Learning Resources Centre
Welcome to the Peak Scientific learning resources centre. We are developing a wide selection of teaching resources, lesson plans, activites, science experiments and reference resources targeted at different stages of learning from early years right up to graduation.
This content is provided free for use by teachers, educational institutes, parents and individuals. You are free to distribute, re-host and print the following content on condition that you do not alter them in any way and that proper credit is given to Peak Scientific Ltd.
Keystages 1 and 2
Introduction to Gases
1 - What is a Gas?
This is a lesson plan for a very simple demonstration to introduce students to the concept of a gas. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is part 1 of 4 lessons in the series Introduction to Gases.
2 - Evaporation and Condensation
This is a lesson plan for a demonstration (to be performed by the teacher) to introduce the concept of evaporation and condensation. It teaches children how to classify different states of materials and how materials can change from one state to another. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is part 2 of 4 lessons in the series Introduction to Gases.
3 - Water Distillation
This lesson plan expands on the lessons learned in Introduction to Gases 2: Evaporation and Condensation. Pupils discover how the principles of evaporation and condensation can be used to separate clean water from soil or food dye. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is part 3 of 4 lessons in the series Introduction to Gases.
4 - Chemical Reactions
This is a lesson plan for a demonstration of how gases can be created as a result of chemical reactions. Pupils will create a chemical reaction from vinegar and baking soda and use the resulting gases to fill balloons in order to see how much gas has been created. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This the final part of 4 lessons in the series Introduction to Gases.
Strong Structures
1 - Paper Bridges
In this lesson pupils are introduced to the idea that the shape of a structure can make it stronger. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is the first part of the Strong Structures series.
2 - Spaghetti Bridges
This lesson continues the exploration of using strong shapes to make strong structures from weak materials. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is the second part of the Strong Structures series.
Space Exploration
1 - Balloon Rocket
In this lesson pupils are introduced to the concept of thrust. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is the first part of the Space Exploration series.
2 - Power of the Sun
In this lesson pupils explore the power of the sun and how it can be harnessed. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is the second part of the Space Exploration series.
3 - Creative Craters
In this lesson pupils explore the causes of craters on the moon's surface. It includes a separate teacher's guide to lead a discussion around the demonstration. This is the final part of the Space Exploration series.
